The number is a cap: the lower of the DTI ceiling and a 30-year loan at an 8.25% test rate. What is left after that payment updates as you go.

Gross yearly pay for everyone in the household, before tax and KiwiSaver. The model taxes that total across the number of earners you choose.

People whose living costs this household covers, usually children. Each one adds $400 a month to the living-cost floor used in the test.

Repayments you already make each month, such as a car loan, credit card, or student loan. They reduce the money left for a mortgage payment.

The total still owed on those other loans. It uses up part of the debt-to-income cap, so the new mortgage has to fit in what is left.

Cash or equity you could put towards a purchase. It is kept with this scenario.

The purchase price you want to test this scenario against. The cap beside it is what the income can service, which may be above or below this price.

Single uses a $1,800 monthly living-cost floor. Couple uses $2,700. Tax still follows the earners control.

How many people the household income is split across before tax. Two earners usually keep more than one person earning the same total, because each person gets the lower tax bands.

Owner-occupier is capped at 6 times household income. Investor is capped at 7 times. That debt-to-income ceiling is one of the two limits in the report. Servicing at the test rate is the other.
